In this Felanitx village home, thermal insulation is provided by expanded cork board — Aglomerado de Corcho Expandido (ICB), also known as Insulation Cork Board — manufactured by Amorim, the world's principal cork producer. It is a 100% renewable, biodegradable material harvested from cork-oak bark without harming the tree. The boards are expanded with steam and bound by the cork's own natural resin (suberin), with no synthetic glues, binders, or added fire retardants, and emit no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Lime paint is naturally breathable, anti-microbial, and free from petrochemical solvents and synthetic biocides typically found in conventional plastic paints. It allows walls to regulate humidity and contributes to healthier indoor air. Along with the exterior facade that are finished with lime-mortar renders (enfoscados y revocos con morteros de cal) rather than cement based renders. Lime mortar is breathable, allowing the wall assembly to manage moisture naturally, and it has a significantly lower embodied carbon than Portland cement. It is the traditional Mediterranean building method for the region.
